Watershed Moments in Roof Drainage History: A study of interactions between precipitation management for the roof and enclosure lifespan
Course Description:
The ability of steep- and shallow-sloped roofs to properly manage rainwater and snow accumulation directly impacts their long-term durability and lifespan, in addition to that of other assemblies within the building enclosure. The entire roof drainage system, including the components that convey the precipitation once it has left the roof, all need to work in accord to ensure that premature roof failure or collapse are avoided, and that the building enclosure can satisfactorily fulfill its intended use.
Drawing on case studies including condition assessments and failure investigations, this presentation will review both lessons learned and current industry practices for the design and construction of roof drainage and will offer suggestions of best practices for consideration moving forward.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will develop a better understanding of the relationship between steep slope roof drainage zones and the likelihood of roofing failures
- Participants will gain perspective around current practices of design professional engagement and resulting roof drainage strategies
- Participants will learn about case studies where lack of end-to-end precipitation management resulted in enclosure component failures not associated with the roof
- Participants will learn about the interaction between degree of roof slope and progressive deflection leading to ponding instability
